Elujay – A Constant Charade [Album Stream]

Oakland singer, songwriter and producer Elujay levels up on “A Constant Charade”, a 12-track album and his solo debut for art-driven indie label drink sum wtr.

The record runs about 35 minutes and plays like a fully formed statement from an artist who’s been quietly shaping the edges of modern alt-R&B and indie pop for almost a decade.

Sonically, the LP is all about fusion. Elujay bends R&B around yacht rock and sophisti-pop textures, pulls in Caribbean and Trinidadian influences (dancehall, lover’s rock, Al Jeel), and threads left-field electronics through the arrangements—sometimes airy and ambient, sometimes closer to dance-floor tempo. Opener “Rogue Heart” rides a breakbeat while he floats between sung vocals and a lightly skittering flow; “Flotilla” stretches the relationship metaphors into water and submersion; “Hyundai”, “Circles” and “Deny” sit in a sweet spot between indie, R&B and soft-focus pop. Later on, “Anjeli” with serpentwithfeet and closer “Stereo Blasting” push deeper into jazzy, atmospheric territory, the latter ending the album on one of his most daring, emotional vocal performances.

Lyrically, “A Constant Charade” digs into the idea of performance—how we shape-shift around others, code-switch, and sometimes lose track of ourselves in the process. Elujay frames the record as him taking the mask off, examining social cues, behavior loops and the ways you can slowly disappear into someone else’s orbit. Recorded over three years in different locations with a small circle of collaborators (including Nicholas Creus, Martin Rodrigues, Jaden Wiggins and Ben Yasemsky), the album feels intimate but adventurous—polished enough for playlists, detailed enough for deep-listen headphones sessions.

Taken front to back, “A Constant Charade” is less a genre exercise and more a mood piece: warm, shape-shifting, emotionally vulnerable and quietly ambitious. It marks a big step for Elujay as a front-and-center album artist—and a strong addition to the drink sum wtr catalog.
