De La Soul – The Package [Audio]

De La Soul just slid a care package onto our doorstep: a horn-dusted, head-nodding return produced by Pete Rock that feels classic without a speck of museum glass.

“The Package” moves like a sunny afternoon on Lenox—low-key groove, unhurried wisdom, verses that sit right in the pocket. Under the hood, Pete flips a slice of The Impressions’ 1969 cut “Seven Years”, giving the record that warm, lived-in snap.

The single also opens the door to a bigger moment. It leads “Cabin in the Sky”—De La’s first album since 2016 and their first since the passing of David Jude “Trugoy” Jolicoeur in 2023—arriving November 21 via Mass Appeal. The LP is framed as therapy and celebration in equal measure, with contributions from DJ Premier, Super Dave, Killer Mike, Yukimi (of Little Dragon), Common, Nas, and Black Thought.

Most poignantly, you hear Trugoy here—his voice threaded into the new single—turning the drop into both a reunion and a remembrance. It’s the rare comeback that doesn’t strain for relevance; it breathes.

Spin it once for the glow and twice for the pen. “The Package” isn’t just a teaser; it’s a statement that De La’s adult-rap sweet spot—craft, clarity, and community—still hits right where hip-hop lives.
