After a 16-year break and without a go-to backing band, Clipse’s Tiny Desk performance took time and careful planning to come together.

Initially, it wasn’t clear what kind of sound they were aiming for — until the direction came in the form of what to avoid: no jazzy reinterpretations. That wasn’t a slight toward jazz, but if you know Clipse, you know their music thrives on pounding drums and razor-sharp synths. Enter Daru Jones, the hybrid drummer known for blending live and electronic percussion, who had previously delivered on The LOX’s Tiny Desk set. He was the obvious choice to bring the raw energy and authenticity the Thornton brothers needed.

From the very first note of “Virginia,” the anticipation in the room exploded — someone in the audience couldn’t hold back and shouted “Oh my god!” The energy didn’t dip for a second as the band powered through “Hell Hath No Fury” standouts like “Keys Open Doors” and “Momma I’m So Sorry.” Seeing Pusha T and Malice perform up close offered a striking contrast: Malice was focused and measured, scanning the crowd with an intense calm, while Pusha played the more animated role, even letting loose a sinister chuckle mid-performance.

Filmed a few weeks earlier, the set included live debuts from their upcoming album “Let God Sort Em Out” — including the emotionally raw “Birds Don’t Sing,” dedicated to their late parents. The crowd barely had time to collect themselves before the unmistakable beat of “Grindin’” dropped, delivering the moment everyone had been waiting for.

With hip-hop’s first half of the year feeling relatively quiet, the timing of this reunion couldn’t be more perfect. This wasn’t just a comeback — it was Clipse delivering their most powerful live performance to date and one of the hardest Tiny Desk sets ever captured.
