Amerigo Gazaway x Common x Stevie Wonder – The Sixth Superstition [Audio x Download]

With our latest Soul Mates Project release, fittingly titled “A Common Wonder”, Amerigo Gazaway brings to life an imagined studio session between Chicago’s crowned prince of Hip-Hop, Common, and Motown legend, Steve Wonder. A return to the Soul meets Hip-Hop formula of his Marvin Gaye + Mos Def pairing “Yasiin Gaye,” Gazaway connects the dots between Hip-Hop and the genre’s predecessor with a musical history lesson told through the intersecting themes of Common and Stevie’s respective catalogues. As Gazaway put it: “Stevie Wonder’s early use of synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers, in a lot of ways, paved the way for hip-hop and sampling. Part of my motivation for this project was to highlight those contributions” Picking up where Common and Stevie’s 2016 “Black America Again”, single left off, Amerigo brings his imagined recording session to life with a slew of uncovered resources (including multitrack instrument stems, interview audio, and documentary soundbites.) Re-orchestrating deconstructed samples, the producer interweaves Common’s vivid wordplay and Wonder’s passionate vocals for a project that blurs the line between a “mashup” and a modern day duets album. Rapper Big Pooh feat. Phonte – Seinfeld (Go Up) [Audio]

Rapper Big Pooh unveils a song from his vaults with Phonte, “Seinfeld (Go Up)”. The 2010 track was originally intended for Pooh’s “Dirty Pretty Things” project. Says Big Pooh: “I heard Swiff D’s work for the first time when I got put up on to Pac Div. I became a fan instantly. I reached out and got some joints from him because I like to work with dope, upcoming, talented, and just cool ass people. It’s 2010 and I start really finding where I want to go sound wise for my next album and began penning to Swiff D joints. I knocked this one out quick, three short verses telling three separate stories. I needed a hook to make it all make sense, hence the title. It reminded me of the show Seinfeld, didn’t necessarily have to start at episode one, but all the episodes made sense in the grand scheme of the show. I hit Phonte for assistance. A couple of weeks go by and he shoots it back to me. I can’t stop playing this joint. I was doing solo shows and performing this joint, I just knew it was going to be the first single off of Dirty Pretty Things. I wanted people to get a sneak peak and be ready for when it did drop officially. The top of 2011 came and shit changed in a hurry. Little Brother is officially over and me and Tay not even on speaking terms. I put the blinders on

Rhythm Roulette w/ Mr. Porter [Video]

For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, MASS APPEAL met up with one of Detroit’s illest, Denaun Porter. As an original member of D12, Mr. Porter has played an instrumental role in Eminem’s career and the history of Shady Records. His time with Em goes all the way back to the MC’s 1996 debut, ‘Infinite,’ and Porter has handled many tracks over the years for the MC and his crew, D12. Let’s also not forget Porter’s work for G-Unit, because he was behind the beats for such classics as 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” and the group’s “Stunt 101.” Other collaborators over the years include Busta Rhymes, Xzibit and Jadakiss. Who knows where Em would be without Mr. Porter? As his trusted hypeman on tour, Porter truly knows how to turn it up a notch. And that is exactly what he did for this episode of Rhythm Roulette. Making a daring leap in the history of RR, Porter remembers that when he was coming up, he only enough money for one record. So in that spirit, he took his chances and only pulled one piece of vinyl from Amoeba Music in Los Angeles. He ended up with some soulful disco from 1977, a sound that most producers stay away from, but you’ll be surprised to see how he flipped it…into three different beats! Watch the full video above.
