De La Soul: “White People Have Had A Significant Hand In Hip-Hop” [Video]

Legendary trio De La Soul recently sat down with VladTV to speak on their relationship with fellow New York rap group Brand Nubian and their opinion on White people in Hip-Hop. Though they feel Lord Jamar of Nubian is a “smart and brave dude,” DJ Maseo couldn’t exactly side with him and his thoughts on Caucasian artists in the genre. “I respect his perspective but I disagree with that,” says Maseo when asked how he felt about Lord Jamar stating that “Whites are guests in the house of Hip-Hop.” In this interview DJ Maseo and the rest of De La Soul reflect back to a time where they grew up in a “colorblind” culture and acts like Blondie and Tom Silverman were “putting out Hip-Hop music well before Russell Simmons.” “White people have had a significant hand in Hip-Hop,” they claim. View the video to hear their thoughts on Lord Jamar and his Internet fame, and more on White people in the majority Black-owned genre.
