Will Sessions – Kindred (feat. Wendell Harrison) + Polyester People (feat. Jeremy Ellis) [Audio]

In advance of their upcoming live jazz fusion album comes a re-release of 2 original songs from the band’s now hard-to-find 2010 album, “Kindred”. The first side features legendary saxophonist, Wen- dell Harrison, who is best known for his work on De- troit’s renownedTribe record label. “Kindred” is a dark and heady composition reminiscent of Miles Davis’s fusion-era material, which despite it’s abstractions, is underpinned by a heavy, head-nodding groove. On the flip is “Polyester People”, an explosive, up- tempo jam which shows off the keyboard skills of Jeremy Ellis. Despite being best known for playing the drum machine alongside the Roots, Ellis is an incredible keyboardist in his own right. His contribution on the Fender Rhodes calls to mind Herbie Hancock’s best work with the Headhunters, and the band never lets up under him!

Here’s another one from Will Sessions’ upcoming debut album, “Deluxe”. “Deluxe”, Will Sessions’ debut LP of original material, is made of tracks previous available as limited press 7” records, freshly remixed and remastered. The album contains guest appearances from Detroit legends Allan Barnes (The Blackbyrds), Amp Fiddler (Parliament/Funkadelic), Florida’s ‘King of Funk’ Rickey Calloway, and relative newcomer Coko (Funk Night Records). “Deluxe” is packed with songs reminiscent of classic soul and funk, deep breaks, tight rhythm tracks, blazing horns and raw vocal performances. Will Sessions impressed with the meticulous craftsmanship of their studio re-workings of the classic tracks on The Elmatic Instrumentals. With their new two-part video “Mix Takes,” the five-piece band is taking a similar approach in recreating some of their favorite songs–only this time it was all recorded and filmed live in real time. Whether referencing music by jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Bob James or replaying beats made famous by Nas or J Dilla, it’s all presented with seamless transitions in the style of a mixtape, and “Mix Takes” both showcases the band’s individual talents and reflects the airtight performances that have made them one of the hottest live bands in Detroit. Download: Will Sessions – Real Sessions Before reinterpreting the music for a pretty well known classic hip hop album from NY, Will Sessions produced a series of wildly successful live shows for Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, and Black Milk in their hometown of Detroit in 2009 and 2010. The band had performed dozens of times in previous years within multiple genres–namely funk, jazz, and afrobeat–but had never tackled hip hop until these shows. “Real Sessions” revisits those performances with 10 selected live recordings showcasing their full 8-piece band recrafting beats from Madlib, J Dilla, Black Milk, Mr. Porter, and Nick Speed; with DJ Dez providing his trademark cuts and scratches. Recorded to multi-track, fully mixed and mastered. Includes an 18-page booklet.
