Young Shawn Carter set the bar high with the dazzling display of wordplay that was Reasonable Doubt. Among the more impressive stunts on Jay-Z’s debut was the classic track “22 Twos,” which served as inspiration for Montreal-based MC Wasiu’s “44 Fours.” Released shortly before Hov released his 4:44 album, Wasiu’s song finds the Haitian-Nigerian lyricist doubling down on the challenge posed by Jay’s ’96 cut. The object of “44 Fours” is to mention the word “four” or “for” no fewer than 44 times. Today MASS APPEAL premieres the visuals for said track, a clever concept piece directed by Zachary Bleau-Prevost that perfectly complements the song. “Zach and I knew we wanted to do something dope with the idea of repeating something 44 times,” says Wasiu, who’s currently preparing to drop his MTLiens 2 project with production by Kaytranada, High Klassified, and Da-P. “Zach thought that the abandoned stage at Parc Lafontaine would visually be the best and so we went for it. The only thing is we didn’t have time to get permission so we had to jump the fence to get through. I cut open my hand hopping the fence and started bleeding which is why I had to keep the gloves on during the shoot. It was a tiring but stressful shoot because not only did I have to rap that verse 44 times but we were on the lookout for cops and security the whole time because if we ended without getting all 44 we would have
