The D.O.C. Reveals: “I’ve Lived With Dr. Dre For Most Of My Life” [Video]

The D.O.C. has worked closely with Dr. Dre over the years, and the Texas-born rapper and writer opened up to us about their long-standing friendship, revealing that they have gotten into some “monumental” fall outs. However, they’ve always managed to come together for all of Dre’s projects, including Detox, which The D.O.C. said he was working on since 2005. “The Formula” rapper explained that Dre initially “wasn’t ready” to work on the project, and after the tracks started leaking online a few years back, Dre “went back underground.” During the conversation The D.O.C. spoke to us about one of the blowouts he had with Dr. Dre that centered around him not having his own money and essentially living off of Dre’s dime. Afterward, The D.O.C. revealed that “I’ve lived with Dre most of my life,” aside from a time when he lived with Snoop Dogg when they had a falling out, which you can hear more about in the above clip.

The D.O.C. On Co-Writing Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic” & Paperwork Not Being Right [Video]

As DJ Vlad lists tracks off of Dr. Dre’s legendary “The Chronic” album, The D.O.C. recalls contributing to some of the biggest hits on the multi-platinum selling album. During the interview, he talked about working on “Nothin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” with Snoop Dogg telling DJ Vlad, “That was one of the first records that Snoop and I worked together on.” He said, “It was me imparting—if you will—to him the formula, for lack of a better way.” As The D.O.C. reminisced about working on most of the album, he admits further into the interview that his alcohol and drug habits may have been the reason behind his improper paperwork. “It’s not about them, it’s about me. I’m drinking everyday. I’m probably doing drugs everyday.”

The D.O.C. On N.W.A. Influencing Gang Culture And The Black Community [Video]

When N.W.A. hit the scene, their gangsta rap style was highly criticized for promoting drugs and violence, which rapper The D.O.C. begs to differ. In an interview with DJ Vlad, he says it was just artists talking about their realities, “The music didn’t make the event, the event caused the music.” During the sit-down, the Dallas-born rapper says “the machine” has pushed a lot of rappers with “juice.” He explained, when it comes to the circle of life in the industry, conscious artists such as Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole have created a balance. “Those guys are bringing conscious on a different level back to production. Even though, it’s not as dirty, it’s kind of dirty,” he told DJ Vlad.

The D.O.C. Details Damaging His Voice In Car Accident [Video]

In November 1989, Tracy Lynn Curry, better known by his stage name The D.O.C., was involved in a near fatal car accident after falling asleep at the wheel which damaged his vocal chords, but later changed his fast pace lifestyle, which he claims is the reason he’s living today. The “No One Can Do It Better” rapper says that he was driving through Beverly Hills after leaving a party inebriated and says that he was stopped by police after running a red light. Although, he says he led them on a mini chase, he tells us he was free to go after telling some jokes and taking photos. “If they’d took me to jail that night, I probably wouldn’t be here today.” He explained to us that the car accident that happened shorty after altered his reckless lifestyle, “At the rate I was going, nobody could tell me anything at that point.” The 47-year-old recounts falling asleep in his car before he slammed into a divider in which he “flew out the back window of the car and ended up in a tree.” He tells us that the accident was so severe that he woke up without his teeth and received vocal damage form medical procedures and actions he took “trying to expedite the health process.”

The D.O.C. sat down for a rare interview with VladTV, where he opened up about first linking up with Dr. Dre, writing Eazy-E’s hit track “We Want Eazy,” and more. During the sit-down The D.O.C. also addressed rumors that he sold his publishing for a gold chain, which he told us is untrue. He added that “I don’t even think being ignorant to the game I would’ve said that.” The interview touched on The D.O.C.’s relationship with Eazy-E, and the Texas-born artist said he tried to follow Eazy’s swag when he first started out in the game. He explained that despite Eazy not having talent as a rapper, The D.O.C. said the West Coast emcee had the “it factor” that made him a star.
