Anti-Lilly & Phoniks – It’s Nice Outside [Album Stream]

Over the past few years, Houston emcee Anti-Lilly has experienced a lot of hardships. Stretches of serious depression combined with the monotony of a 9-to-5 lifestyle, temptations from the streets and betrayal from a close friend forced him into isolation. Using Phoniks jazzy soundscapes as a coping mechanism, Anti paints a vivid picture of the struggles he’s endured since we last heard from the duo on 2014’s “Stories From The Brass Section”. The album’s 17 tracks are stitched together with voicemail’s the young Houston rhyme-spitter received from friends and family trying to reach him while he was shut out from the world. Through it all, Anti emerges from his experiences with a renewed optimism, letting the world know “It’s Nice Outside” despite all the pain and suffering he’s withstood. “Thank y’all. This is the only way I know how to get through it. I lost my way for a while, honestly I’m still tryna figure everything out. I’m learning that we all are, though. I done lost as much as I gained, but it was all necessary. This album is dedicated to everyone who feels like me. Thanks for being so patient with me. God Bless” – Anti-Lilly It's Nice Outside by Anti-Lilly & Phoniks

Awon & Phoniks – Knowledge Of Self [Album]

“Knowledge of Self” is the 2nd official offering from hip-hop duo Awon & Phoniks. Coming over 2 years after releasing their debut album “Return to the Golden Era” in Summer of 2013, the Newport News, VA emcee and Portland, ME producer have been working diligently on their follow-up. While the debut LP was a throwback to 90’s hip-hop in every sense, with lyrics focusing on Awon’s troubled youth and tales of street grandeur, their 2nd LP sees the group maintain their signature sound while refining things both musically and lyrically. This time Awon is speaking from the present, educating youth on tracks like ‘Reflections’ and speaking on current social climates in ‘Summer Madness’ and ‘Profit Off My Pain’. He has adapted his rhymes to more relevant topics while keeping his all-natural flow groove-locked in the pocket. The duo also capitalized on the networking opportunities their first LP provided, collaborating with a multitude of talented artists from all over the globe such as Oslo’s Ivan Ave and London’s Heeni. Phoniks shows his maturation as a producer on tracks like the trunk rattling ‘Do They Really Love You’ and ‘Be Real With It’ featuring jazzy piano chops, subtly layered samples and off-beat, un-quantized rhythms. While the debut LP was crafted with the artists in isolation, recording and emailing each other from their respective bedroom studios, “Knowledge Of Self” was made possible by traveling across the east coast and working together in state of the art recording facilities. The tracks are given a

Awon & Phoniks – Natural High [Stream]

Natural High is the first single off the forthcoming EP by Awon entitled “Matte Black”. Like the album, Natural High takes a more personal approach from Awon. The song deals with the task of maintaining a relationship while perusing his own dreams. He exposes his own flaws while pointing out the positive aspects of his lady. While this track may seem like a typical and smug ode to the opposite sex, it is quite deceptive in its own right. This song is developed with the streets in mind. Phoniks laces the track with cuts and his signature bass heavy jazz style of production. Sit back, spark up and go on this journey with Awon & Phoniks.

Anti-Lilly & Phoniks – Stories From The Brass Section [Free LP]

Phoniks: When a writeup on my debut album “Return to the Golden Era” with Awon mentioned Anti and myself in the same breath as far as young artists coming with an old school flavor, I checked out his mixtape and reached out to him about a collab. The music and chemistry flowed immediately and we began recording a few singles until it was clear we had to do a full album. I love the way Anti flows over my beats, it is reminiscent of 90’s acts like Outkast and Goodie Mob who brought a southern flow over beats that had more of a raw, New York type of sound. He also comes with a lot of thought provoking lines and unconventional rhyme schemes that remind me of emcees like MF Doom and Talib Kweli, but with that Houston sound mixed in. I was listening to a lot of early Dilla beat tapes and Pete Rock stuff during the production of this album and you will be able to hear that influence throughout the project. Anti: Ever since Phoniks first reached out to me and started sending music I knew that we would have an amazing chemistry together. My first time listening to his production, the horns immediately put into a zone which allowed me to express myself like no other way before. His sound reminded me of J Dilla or Pete Rock. After Memoirs I was looking to keep more of classical jazz sound; after recording a few songs together
