Off The Record: Cyhi The Prynce On Kanye’s “FourFiveSeconds” [Video]

Cyhi The Prynce is the latest guest on Mass Appeal’s “Off The Record” series.

In today’s episode of Off The Record, CyHi the Prynce speaks about the sessions that led to Kanye’s 2015 mega collab with Paul McCartney and Rihanna, “FourFiveSeconds.” Having contributed to four of the G.O.O.D. Music boss’ previous albums—starting with the classic ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ in 2010—CyHi has had his share of gonzo-style Kanye sessions. Like many of the songs on ‘Yeezus’ and ‘Watch the Throne,’ “FourFiveSeconds” was a global endeavor, spanning eight months with sessions in Paris, Italy, and Los Angeles. CyHi credits one session in particular as the song’s launchpad. “One day [Kanye] told me, ‘Meet me at Beverly Hills Hotel,” CyHi tells MASS APPEAL. “When I pulled up, Ye was in this super vintage room. Then Paul comes in like 5-10 minutes later and he’s just on the piano playing. I’m like, ‘Man, I just cannot believe I’m actually here…’ Once he laid those few parts, we went back and kinda critiqued them.” CyHi describes his contributions to Kanye records as a testing board of sorts—a valued opinion in the studio. “[Kanye] just likes my opinion when I say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’. If I get super excited, he knows it’s dope. If I’m just chillin’, then he’s like, ‘Ah, that probably wasn’t that good—CyHi ain’t excited. So I think being a part of that whole situation is super cool.” “FourFiveSeconds” went on to re-introduce Paul McCartney to his first top 10 appearance on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 29 years. As usual with Kanye songs, the hit features a handful of songwriters and collaborators including West, McCartney, Kirby Lauryen, Mike Dean, Ty Dolla Sign, Dave Longstreth, Dallas Austin, Elon Rutberg, and Noah Goldstein.
