Dam-Funk Breaks Down His New DJ-Kicks Compilation [Video]

Much like the genre he’s prominently championed, Dâm-FunK is no joke. As a professor of funk, he’s enlightened the masses on the tenets established by its forefathers, constructing an extensive catalog of original recordings along the way; not to mention his seminal mixes and inimitable remixes. And when he’s not spinning his own cuts, Dâm pays homage—rather than keeping his crates clandestine or asserting that the ability to select records is innately worthy of praise.

Now serving as the preeminent pioneer of modern funk, Dâm’s pushing the culture forward, continuing to educate while he creates. His latest release, a new compilation for !K7’s DJ Kicks series, finds him once again at a proverbial chalk board, instructing those woke enough to peep game.

On a recent trip to New York City (which tragically coincided with the passing of his idol, Prince), we caught up with Dâm on the west side of the city to chop it up about his DJ Kicks compilation, and how it serves as a conduit to the funk in us all.
