2Pac feat. Yo-Yo – Dear Mama (Original Version) [Audio x Download]

DJ King Assassin unleashes the OG version of 2Pac’s classic “Dear Mama”. “The original version of ‘Dear Mama’ was far different than the version that was released, as far as the hook was constructed,” DJ King Assassin explained. “Originally, the hook was a sample of a song from the legendary rapper and friend of both of ours named Yo-Yo, from Ice Cube’s [Da] Lench Mob. The sample was ‘Wouldn’t be a damn thang without a woman,’ which was taken from the original song from Ice Cube’s ‘This Is A Man’s World,’ with the scratching done, of course, by yours truly DJ King Assassin. The day after we had finished up on everything we were in Echo Sound in L.A. when Tupac comes in the studio very upset and proceeds to explain to us that we had to take out Yo-Yo’s part because a person by the name of Pat Charbonet would not give us the clearance to use that part in the song, so we had no choice but to take it out and that’s where even the Richard Pryor excerpt, which you will hear, is completely off the released version of the song.”

Torii Wolf – 1st [Audio]

Enter Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter and musician from Wantagh, New York who traded coasts–bouncing around West Coast cities and enhanced herself artistically; shunning categories, confinement, and convention. Torii also just happens to be the first female artist to have her entire project (the forthcoming album entitled Flow Riiot) produced by Preemo. “Torii has such a weird, wicked style,” Premier offers. “It’s just very left field—reminiscent of a Bjork or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer. But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”

Between The Lines: Rittz – Diamonds & Gold [Video]

Strange Music’s Rittz takes us Between the Lines of his new song “Diamonds & Golds,” delving deep into his Atlanta upbringings. Atlanta-bred emcee Rittz, who released his new album Top of the Line today, is the latest star of Between the Lines. The album is led by the new singles “The Formula,” featuring his Strange Music labelmates, as well as the smooth-coasting “Inside of the Groove,” featuring E-40 and Mike Posner. When Rittz stopped by the HNHH office, we delved into Top of the Line and had Rittz rap an especially personal verse off the track “Diamonds & Gold” on the back staircase. Afterwards, he came back into the studio to explain the inspiration behind the true-to-life verse (verse #2) and unpack some of its choice lyrics. “You gotta watch out how you show off your diamonds and gold,” said Rittz of the meaning behind the song’s title. He’s seen his peers end up in jail for flaunting their money too readily. The “Diamonds & Gold” verse in question paints a detailed portrait of the Eagle Point neighborhood in the Northside of Atlanta in which Rittz grew up. It’s a relatively unassuming middle class neighborhood, and hence, it often catches outsiders off guard. People think they can bring their street dealings into the suburbs, though as Rittz tells it, “Everybody ends up getting caught up.” He goes on to talk of his regrets about dropping out of school after the 9th grade and how many of his friends never “made
