Kanye West x Lorde – Lorde Yeezus [Mixtape]

“I started working on this album in May, 2014, when I took a train from LA to Portland with two friends. We left at 10 AM, and we ate, drank, saw the California coast and snow in southern Oregon, got cabin fever, and barely slept over the next 30 hours, but I made a lot of music, including the initial demos for this album. The Lorde and Kanye combination is especially attractive to me in part because they’ve both expressed mutual admiration for each other despite having such disparate styles, but then in listening to each, realizing they do have thematic overlaps. My hope with this album was to bring out the elements of each that otherwise goes unrecognized in each of their original works. Also, I really love both artists — Lorde for her ability to capture feelings and sentiments that I can vividly remember having as a teenager, and Kanye for continuing to reinvent his style and shape the direction of the genre with each album. Each are unmistakably themselves — you wouldn’t confuse their work for someone else’s. Besides the train ride, I made pieces of this album across coffee shops and friends’ apartments in San Francisco, Portland, New York, Kauai and Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Huge thanks to all my friends and family who listened to demos, entertained incessant conversations about minutiae of the album, and dealt with me on little sleep — I truly appreciate it. It’s already 4:00am and while writing this sort of rambling about

Dee Goodz – Don Madden [Mixtape]

“I recently ended my ties with my former indie and because of that I wanted to hit the gas pedal. Time to destroy and rebuild. Time to make some plays. I wanted to gift my fans with something after my album had its problems during the release. I felt as though I owed them something for the mishap. Also, I love the art of making music and I have a lot of music so I decided to drop off something free to the fans supporting my movement. This is something to let them know we are still hungry and continuously on the grind.” – Dee Goodz Download: Dee Goodz – Don Madden

Truth Ali feat. Royce Da 5’9″ – Lost In Paradise [Stream x Download]

Dynamic flow and inventive lyrics coupled with a heavy baritone voice are just a few ways to describe rising emcee, Truth Ali. Born in Bakersfield California, Truth represents the struggle and blue collar work ethic of his hometown combined with the laid-back appeal of his adopted home town San Diego, California. Truth was raised around music, as his grandfather, Sunny Stokes, was a jazz/funk singer and as such, he values the technical side of emceeing, like syllable/wordplay, metaphors and storytelling. His goal is to remain true to himself and create music that resonates for generations ahead. “I didn’t do my job if I’m not drenched in sweat after I perform,” Truth continues. “I want to connect with people so that they experience my emotions. And maybe, just maybe make someone who has dealt with the same struggles as me, feel free for that moment.” Truth Ali is currently completing his debut album, Trail Of Tears, but today he releases the projects first single, “Lost In Paradise,” featuring Royce Da 5’9”.

Vursatyl – Bring It To A Halt [Stream]

Here goes the second single from Vursatyl’s “Crooked Straights” project, which is set to drop on April 27th. If you’ve caught Blackalicious on tour over the last fifteen years or so, you will have witnessed first hand the prodigious talent of Portland based rapper and singer Vursatyl. Now 24 years into his rap career, “Crooked Straights” marks a new chapter in Vurstatyl’s story; unbelievably this is the first time he’s taken centre stage to release a solo record. Full of warm, soulful, Dilla-esque hip hop beats created largely by local Portland producers, Vursatyl provides a master-class in the art of lyricism with a record which surely cements his reputation as one of the most respected artists in the hip hop community. Conscious lyrics delivered with a sense of fun and a touch of swagger makes this a ‘must check’ record for fans of golden era Hip Hop. “Crooked Straights” is my conflict. This Gold Chain wearin’, clothes hound, fly guy is “Crooked”. He’s also something of a taboo in “conscious Hip Hop”. But I also strive to keep things positive, both in mind and word… That’s the “Straights”. I’ve included the visual for the first single “Super” after the jump.

Clear Soul Forces – Kaboom [Stream]

Taken from Clear Soul Forces’ new album Fab Five, produced by NAMELESS out April 28th, 2015 on Fat Beats Records! Detroit’s Ilajide, E-Fav, Noveliss & L.A.Z. (aka Clear Soul Forces) armed with an arsenal of thunderous beats from rising producer NAMELESS combine to form the Fab Five. The group’s vision – combining Golden Era rhymes with a contemporary style – is as clear as ever here, heightened by their collective synergy with Nameless, who handles the majority of the production on the LP, reprising his role as producer to Clear Soul Forces from “Unlimited Bounce”, a highlight off of their last full-length, Gold PP7s. Fab Five ushers in a new era for Detroit’s storied musical tradition – the city that produced Motown, Jay Dee and Eminem has seen a revival of late, with the likes of Black Milk, Danny Brown and Royce Da 5’9” weaving the city’s rich history into their work in increasingly inventive ways. Clear Soul Forces & NAMELESS continue the tradition nodding to the Motor City’s artistic legacy while carving their own path. With production by NAMELESS and raps by the four Detroit emcees, the Fab Five are here to save Hip Hop the only way possible, with quality rhymes over quality beats.
